Well, what can I say? Controversy never goes out of style and that was
the inspiration behind creating a Donald Trump version of my popular
Knock Down Doll! Dressed in presidential red, white and blues, our new
leader is ready for the games to begin... are you? His official presidency begins today, but he's already causing conflict among world leaders, politicians, and we the people!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lvasXdnp_VM/WH_n-SAyQyI/AAAAAAAADnI/LUa-lQ4wNYoNy0nbaX87DDh70VCdarcrQCLcB/s1600/TrumpYelling.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lvasXdnp_VM/WH_n-SAyQyI/AAAAAAAADnI/LUa-lQ4wNYoNy0nbaX87DDh70VCdarcrQCLcB/s400/TrumpYelling.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Whether you love to
hate him or hate to love him, our orange-toned, yelling-faced, comb-over-haired leader was setting himself up for a good old fashioned knock-down. So I took that to heart and made him part of my Knock Down Doll collection. Of course I had to take a whimsical approach when designing this likeness of our fearless leader. That was the fun part!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UXniqRmokco/WH_q8jIAgNI/AAAAAAAADnU/qv51ARPgn38RI4xCaG-S7oSk99fEdFDXwCLcB/s1600/DumpTrump.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="331" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UXniqRmokco/WH_q8jIAgNI/AAAAAAAADnU/qv51ARPgn38RI4xCaG-S7oSk99fEdFDXwCLcB/s400/DumpTrump.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I even made a design for the reverse side—complete with a "KNOCK ME DOWN" sign taped to his back—this whimsical arcade game throwback has so far amused both Democrats and Republicans alike. Funny thing is, I actually came up with the idea for a President Trump version of these dolls when I turned off the television. Yup, that's right. I wanted to relax a little more and spend some time on my hobbies, like drawing. So my mind got all empty and my hands were drawing pictures, and I was totally being in the moment when my brain was like, "OMG! You should totally do a Donald Trump version of your Knock Down Doll!" So I did.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jWldvn95wAc/WH_soEpsv-I/AAAAAAAADng/KYiFeTRz9VcXhchJvwjlFADSMYFV7Az5gCLcB/s1600/TrumpKnockDownDoll.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jWldvn95wAc/WH_soEpsv-I/AAAAAAAADng/KYiFeTRz9VcXhchJvwjlFADSMYFV7Az5gCLcB/s400/TrumpKnockDownDoll.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The design process takes quite a bit of time for these faux furry friends. I need to stay within my current template, make them resemble my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/undefined/shop/YesterdaysTrashArt?ref=hdr_shop_menu&section_id=15442282">other Knock Down Doll styles</a>, make it actually look like The Donald, complete with appropriate hair and wardrobe. I do it all by hand and then I scan it into Photoshop and colorize it for optimum visual impact. But I do love the challenge of it all. It really is fun. <br />

<div style="font-family: inherit;">
<span style="font-size: small;">I was so excited when the editor of Prims magazine contacted me about a couple of my modern vintage rag dolls. One of my favorite <a href="https://stampington.com/publications/publications">Stampington & Company</a> publications, Prims is among my very favorite. Chock full of all types of primitive style dolls from softies to sculpted versions, it’s a mixed media doll makers dream. So I was blushing with pride when I got the call to pen an article for their magazine, and super excited when I received the issue and saw my name on the front cover!<br /> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0bC9MqlmWw0/WFwL9oLFIEI/AAAAAAAADmo/zUM2hQ048rkJfWGFSNTWFCEjkg0-eYi2wCLcB/s1600/BernardSpread1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0bC9MqlmWw0/WFwL9oLFIEI/AAAAAAAADmo/zUM2hQ048rkJfWGFSNTWFCEjkg0-eYi2wCLcB/s400/BernardSpread1.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: inherit;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Being inspired by just about everything around me, I discovered a fondness for making dolls that resemble my favorite desserts. So I had worked with the editor in picking out the most appropriate dolls for the issue, and we decided on my 3-tiered cake and a smiling cupcake because they had a common teal color scheme. When I sent them off to be photographed, I had no idea what an adorable layout they would create with my babies! To pair them with the kitchen scale, muffin tin and sit them next to each other like they were best friends…. well, I was just tickled at how it turned out!<br /> </span></div>

A More Colorful Solution...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fVFR5ucwX8Y/WEhHQoelbCI/AAAAAAAADl8/QVLHMWAcfjQp6k4MioxSt3Va13RB6AZ7ACLcB/s1600/KnockDownCircusPunk.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="367" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fVFR5ucwX8Y/WEhHQoelbCI/AAAAAAAADl8/QVLHMWAcfjQp6k4MioxSt3Va13RB6AZ7ACLcB/s400/KnockDownCircusPunk.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
For about 6 years now I've been making these Tillie version Knock Down Dolls in fun, circus-themed colors. The seafoam version was to match the color of the Palace Amusements building in Asbury Park, where Tillie's smiling countenance watched over children of all ages for decades.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mnDpa6V7DxY/WEhIrKfP3II/AAAAAAAADmA/xs2DcREdd_4NZ26vvcse8TFyLbuYQpLygCLcB/s1600/94CircusPunkAngle.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mnDpa6V7DxY/WEhIrKfP3II/AAAAAAAADmA/xs2DcREdd_4NZ26vvcse8TFyLbuYQpLygCLcB/s400/94CircusPunkAngle.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
An orange version was perfect for clowning around. Bright and cheery and colorfully circus-y.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y4UbEpI_L2k/WEhJ_PCVBkI/AAAAAAAADmI/1Ylrrw0aK4I4SSNPSc153TMunvrxyhsxQCLcB/s1600/FatKatCircusPunk.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="376" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y4UbEpI_L2k/WEhJ_PCVBkI/AAAAAAAADmI/1Ylrrw0aK4I4SSNPSc153TMunvrxyhsxQCLcB/s400/FatKatCircusPunk.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
And a royal blue version gave nod to a spiffy, more dressed up Tillie. And in all those years, I've sold over 100 of them.... with no complaints from the crowd.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7JaCK8iYxwI/WEhN2wf76YI/AAAAAAAADmU/AkLB2k0rkZwYYS0rV6p2P0W1atYmuGVlACLcB/s1600/%2BNewColors.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7JaCK8iYxwI/WEhN2wf76YI/AAAAAAAADmU/AkLB2k0rkZwYYS0rV6p2P0W1atYmuGVlACLcB/s400/%2BNewColors.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Then, one day... I was like, "Hey! How about some new colors?" which was quickly followed by, "Duh!" and a head-slap. So, I decided to try out a pink version, to perhaps appeal to the ladies out there... a dusty lavender version, because I was feeling dandy... and a teal version, well, just for something different.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6u28AaK6KnU/WEhFSWnmDwI/AAAAAAAADmQ/UN7oz8a543gwxB6ENsSdwRigbZanuAEqwCEw/s1600/KnockDownDollsNEW.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6u28AaK6KnU/WEhFSWnmDwI/AAAAAAAADmQ/UN7oz8a543gwxB6ENsSdwRigbZanuAEqwCEw/s400/KnockDownDollsNEW.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The exciting part was that I had just been contacted by someone who previously purchased one of my Knock Down Dolls and wanted to buy 5 more — in all different colors — to make a boardwalk themed display. And with the 3 new colors, I just so happened to be able to give her exactly what she wanted. A more colorful solution!<br />
<br />
And since I was already fiddling with faux fur, sitting at the sewing machine, had hammer and tacks handy, and ribbons galore to rummage through... I made 2 whole sets. One for my patron and the other for you! <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9vMenZRv6jY/VRQYknEqWqI/AAAAAAAADjE/XjfIEeJX_20/s1600/OpeningIntro.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9vMenZRv6jY/VRQYknEqWqI/AAAAAAAADjE/XjfIEeJX_20/s1600/OpeningIntro.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
In my quest to find something to scratch my creative itches this year, that utilized much of the ephemera and mementos I've collected from flea markets over time, and that would bring more joy and lightheartedness into my daily making... I began creating these vintage-inspired mixed media collages. That's the something new.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e2GP5Fj9sxk/VRQZqNWQoxI/AAAAAAAADjM/MPkspHJCeLg/s1600/Rainmaker1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e2GP5Fj9sxk/VRQZqNWQoxI/AAAAAAAADjM/MPkspHJCeLg/s1600/Rainmaker1.JPG" height="400" width="316" /></a></div>
This is where it all begins. Finally finding a landing place for all my papers, old photos, book pages, candy wrappers, scrapbook papers, antique ledgers, music books, tickets, maps and odd little scraps of stampings and such... well... That's the something old. Those things kind of set my soul on fire. If you saw my stash, you might laugh at the tiniest scraps of things that I am not able to part with. I'm not sure why, but the most miniscule piece of torn paper makes my heart beat just a little bit faster. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V5VkdnN3N_4/VRQbCw5rz2I/AAAAAAAADjU/eoBM9CpPzGY/s1600/SideshowDetail.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V5VkdnN3N_4/VRQbCw5rz2I/AAAAAAAADjU/eoBM9CpPzGY/s1600/SideshowDetail.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Being able to get into all the details and embellishing with paint, pencil, ribbons, buttons and other found objects... well... that just sets my brain on fire! I tweak and tweak and tweak and tweak each piece until it looks 'just right'. And what does that mean? When it has the perfect balance of color, visual weight, places for the eye to fall, and the story is clear... that's when I know I'm done.<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SPdU5qG3dfQ/VRQcwcJ9xpI/AAAAAAAADjs/hOvL5pJ-zIc/s1600/Bernard7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SPdU5qG3dfQ/VRQcwcJ9xpI/AAAAAAAADjs/hOvL5pJ-zIc/s1600/Bernard7.jpg" height="400" width="312" /></a><br />
When did my love affair of all thing collage-y begin? Probably back
around the turn of the century! I first discovered a publication called
<a href="http://stampington.com/somerset-gallery">Somerset Studio</a>, that had within it's gorgeous, glossy pages, samples of
artwork similar to what I wanted to create. They called it mixed media collage.
And so my quest began. I traveled the country to gather and play with
like-minded souls. I discovered new and exciting projects and
techniques. I found talented and patient teachers and inspirational workshops. One of
those masterful instructors was <a href="http://lynnwhipple.com/">Lynn Whipple</a>. Her whimsical and lighthearted
approach to collage inspired me to keep going. And keep going I did! <br />
<br />
Earlier this year, when my thoughts turned to adding more joy and lightheartedness into my daily creative practice, my thoughts returned to that special instructor of more than a decade ago. I found an online class she was teaching — aptly named <a href="http://www.carlasonheim.com/the-joy-of-collage-with-lynn-whipple/">The Joy of Collage</a> — and signed up in a heartbeat, so I could brush up on my techniques and playfulness. And brush up (pun intended)... I did! That's the something borrowed.<br />

I soon became obsessed with making mixed media magic. I could relax my brain and let my heart take over. It was a much needed break from the complex engineering of the sculpted art dolls I made throughout 2014. I started working on multiple collages at a time, all in different stages. I could play with paper, or paint, or stamping, or details, at my leisure with the freedom to choose whatever was calling me at the time. I started creating works in different themes and different colors (that's where the something blue comes in)... all while using Lynn's visual gauge of, "if it makes you laugh, then go with it".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HAIqP3hOI5A/VRQs2bhrmsI/AAAAAAAADkM/ktFqkoHBSLk/s1600/StrangeBird.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HAIqP3hOI5A/VRQs2bhrmsI/AAAAAAAADkM/ktFqkoHBSLk/s1600/StrangeBird.jpg" height="400" width="312" /></a></div>
Working in that way, I found that when I'm finished with a piece, I think, "Awww, I'm done already?" And so I'm on to the next one... to create more fun, more whimsy, more joy and more lightheartedness in my creative soul. Throughout this process the ideas keep coming, and I look forward to exploring these mixed media collages in 2015 and seeing where they take me!<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j-ND-RRoTcI/VQhxm5grpFI/AAAAAAAADhA/iB656YfqT8Q/s1600/Heads.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j-ND-RRoTcI/VQhxm5grpFI/AAAAAAAADhA/iB656YfqT8Q/s1600/Heads.JPG" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
After drooling over a full season of inspiration brought to me by the American Horror Story: FreakShow television series, I set my sights on creating a collection of art dolls with a circus sideshow theme! So I thought I'd take you behind the scenes — or should I say under the big top — for a little sneak peek.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IDg8bCXmUiw/VQhyYsAAc4I/AAAAAAAADhI/pY8QgOrF5Eg/s1600/Bodies.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IDg8bCXmUiw/VQhyYsAAc4I/AAAAAAAADhI/pY8QgOrF5Eg/s1600/Bodies.JPG" height="270" width="400" /></a></div>
Being the first of my art doll endeavors with a single theme, I carefully considered which characters I would create, based on the unique oddities and attractions from the show.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YhuNHNUzuD8/VQhzQkOpP9I/AAAAAAAADhU/EqT8IwL6oFQ/s1600/StrongmanBefore.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YhuNHNUzuD8/VQhzQkOpP9I/AAAAAAAADhU/EqT8IwL6oFQ/s1600/StrongmanBefore.JPG" height="318" width="400" /></a></div>
Of course Dell Toledo, The Stupendous Strongman was a big influence. In fact, I knew months ago when I came across furry leopard fabric, that I wanted to create a doll with bulging muscles, a neanderthal brow, and a handlebar moustache, lifting a ton of weight (okay, maybe about half a ton!) <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1c840FNNims/VQh0FYd7qqI/AAAAAAAADhc/8635KDSrFv8/s1600/STrongmanAfter.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1c840FNNims/VQh0FYd7qqI/AAAAAAAADhc/8635KDSrFv8/s1600/STrongmanAfter.JPG" height="372" width="400" /></a></div>
That handlebar moustache... well, it ended up being as big as he is! But I do love to exaggerate features on my dolls, so when it made me laugh, I knew it was perfect!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HCSaGEA28VY/VQh1K5LX7HI/AAAAAAAADhk/TOXknutSrgY/s1600/BeardedLadyDressing.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HCSaGEA28VY/VQh1K5LX7HI/AAAAAAAADhk/TOXknutSrgY/s1600/BeardedLadyDressing.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Dell's former wife Ethel — The Bearded Lady — was a gentle soul and touched my heart. I wanted to dress her in a 1920's style dress, like from her early stage days where she was loved and adored. I tried several different items to dress her up, and felt that this old silk and lace camisole of mine fit the bill. Yes, I save everything!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZtCOezkphB4/VQh2RZ8zfGI/AAAAAAAADhs/sgDNsm0pVMM/s1600/BeardedLadyFace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZtCOezkphB4/VQh2RZ8zfGI/AAAAAAAADhs/sgDNsm0pVMM/s1600/BeardedLadyFace.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Of course to go with the theme of the time, no bearded lady dressed in 1920's garb, is complete without a blingy headband!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZG79S3CIOj0/VQh2vAeyFAI/AAAAAAAADh0/EpXZlmETSuY/s1600/TwistyBefore.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZG79S3CIOj0/VQh2vAeyFAI/AAAAAAAADh0/EpXZlmETSuY/s1600/TwistyBefore.JPG" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
Then there was Twisty the Clown. A very sick and twisted individual who's specialty was murder! This doll was probably the most difficult sculpture I've created to date. But working from a photograph of a real character kinda made it a little easier than my other dolls, if that makes sense. I put my twist on it (pun intended) and love the way he came out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GlHxDC2YKAw/VQh3k0uerPI/AAAAAAAADiA/6xQV-oWDyaE/s1600/TwistyCreepyHands.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GlHxDC2YKAw/VQh3k0uerPI/AAAAAAAADiA/6xQV-oWDyaE/s1600/TwistyCreepyHands.JPG" height="325" width="400" /></a></div>
Pretty freaking scary! I do love making cute things, but I love making creepy things just as much. This certainly appealed to that part of my personality.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L0qgiFJDUlw/VQh39Fp6EZI/AAAAAAAADiI/_zHHRs58P50/s1600/TwinsConjoined.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L0qgiFJDUlw/VQh39Fp6EZI/AAAAAAAADiI/_zHHRs58P50/s1600/TwinsConjoined.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
My conjoined twin girls Faith and Hope, were definitely inspired by Bette and Dot from American Horror Story. I dressed them up using a gorgeous pair of lace shorts my mom bought me last year, but alas... were too small. Yes, I save everything! My stash of vintage jewelry, buttons, baubles, beads and ribbon help make every doll a unique and individual piece of art, and lots of fun to accessorize.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Lfkq_06OVXY/VQh468ZIQAI/AAAAAAAADiU/awzZadBsBdw/s1600/KnifeThrowerWheel1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Lfkq_06OVXY/VQh468ZIQAI/AAAAAAAADiU/awzZadBsBdw/s1600/KnifeThrowerWheel1.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
My love of all things side show — and the fact that the Wheel of Death made an appearance in the television series — is why I had to create a Knife-Thrower's Assistant! Where does one acquire a doll-sized wheel? In the clock components section of A.C. Moore, of course!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ABwigKUNyIE/VQh5ocTRfyI/AAAAAAAADic/HrBhEd29M9o/s1600/KnifeThrowerTorso.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ABwigKUNyIE/VQh5ocTRfyI/AAAAAAAADic/HrBhEd29M9o/s1600/KnifeThrowerTorso.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I dressed my Assistant in a goth style lace and tulle dress, complete with a tiny tutu. The main part of the dress is from an upcycled blouse I bought at a sample sale years ago but never wore because I'm not really very appealing in black, LOL. Did I mention that I save everything?<br />
<br />
And last but not least. The Ringmaster...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y7QYNX6mjEw/VQh6o9UeDVI/AAAAAAAADio/TMwpYjQSjew/s1600/RingmasterFinale.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y7QYNX6mjEw/VQh6o9UeDVI/AAAAAAAADio/TMwpYjQSjew/s1600/RingmasterFinale.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Inspired by Elsa Mars, mistress of the freaks and — unbeknownst to many of the others — was one of them herself. [Spoiler Alert!] Having had her legs cut off for a German snuff film, Elsa was given a pair of wooden legs by one of her "suitors". For my version, the Ringmaster sits atop a vintage bird cage, with a pair of antique wooden bobbins dangling below her torso. At a commanding 2 feet tall in total, her Marie Antoinette style skirt barely hides the history of her past.<br />
<br />
Now, by this time you may be wondering why I haven't shown you each of my latest art dolls in all their fabulously freakish glory. Well, here at the FreakShow, you've got to buy a ticket to see the monsters. Pssst! Stick around, and I'll let you know where to get one!michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-39693731223207445252014-12-23T17:47:00.001-05:002014-12-23T17:47:08.125-05:00Let It Sno... Peas... and More Art Doll Tales...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Well the weather outside is frighful, but making these dolls is so delightful... and since I've no place to go, I let it sno, let it sno, let it sno... cone, that is! This bright and cheerful tri-colored shaved ice guy is just one of the creations in my most recent collection of Art Dolls. Inspired by my years growing up near the beach and boardwalk, he's all dolled up for the winter!<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-afopsgLSKa0/VJnla5AFITI/AAAAAAAADco/7Cm_LLhNY0k/s1600/Bernard3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-afopsgLSKa0/VJnla5AFITI/AAAAAAAADco/7Cm_LLhNY0k/s1600/Bernard3.jpg" height="240" width="400" /></a></div>
Have you ever thought that you and your friends were like peas in a pod? Well, so have these gals! This trio of funny-faced, smiling pals are BFF's, and perfectly content right where they are... side-by-side-by-side!<br />
<br />

This cute little lawbreaker is titled <i>Guerilla Artist: Tag, You're It!</i> Inspired by wordplay... a <i>guerilla</i> graffiti chick in a <i>gorilla</i> suit... I can't really remember which came first now! Was it the stuffed (and since repurposed) ape I found at a local yard sale? Or was it the graffiti theme? Either way, this piece utilized both my sculpting and graphic design skills which were fun to combine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sjgGbyWu13U/VJnn0XaGNfI/AAAAAAAADc8/FIlOIRXgJdY/s1600/Bernard4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sjgGbyWu13U/VJnn0XaGNfI/AAAAAAAADc8/FIlOIRXgJdY/s1600/Bernard4.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>

It's time to make a Steampunk-themed doll, for sure! I started out with the vintage, Vicorian, mixed metal theme for this doll and she took me to heights unknown! So many flea market antiques and parts that I upcycled on her... fabrics, trims, vintage jewelry and bric-a-brac... it took more than 30 hours of dressing and sewing and engineering to get her outfit just right!<br />
<br />
And I fell in love with her little copper batwings (which I hand made from copper sheeting) and ultra coool jetpack (made from a vintage oil camp stove burner). This doll was so much fun to create, from her sink drain hat to her salt shaker pantalooned legs! I may have a new favorite.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xj9GGPkRJxo/VJnpZ4DxaOI/AAAAAAAADdQ/jvUXpTDffEQ/s1600/Bernard2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xj9GGPkRJxo/VJnpZ4DxaOI/AAAAAAAADdQ/jvUXpTDffEQ/s1600/Bernard2.jpg" height="400" width="283" /></a></div>
Hey, man! You goin' down to Yasgur's Farm? Gotta get back to the land and set my soul free! This groovy hippie chick was inspired by the summer of 1969 and the Woodstock concert. Although I was only born a year before half a million people gathered at Bethel, NY for 3 days of Peace & Music, I always loved the 60's. I often dressed in garb just like hers for many a Halloween. Although, I must confess, I've dressed like that on regular days too! Peace!<br />
<br />
So... these are just a few of the Art Dolls I've had the pleasure of creating in the past couple of months. At the beginning of the year I had announced I was going to <a href="http://michellereneebernard.blogspot.com/2014/01/going-to-land-of-dolls.html">spend the entire year making these dolls</a>, and wow! what a journey it has been. I ended up making 29 dolls altogether, which was less than my goal (although, do my <a href="http://michellereneebernard.blogspot.com/2014/10/aaaand-sold.html">conjoined twins</a> count as two dolls? That would make it an even 30!). But each doll was so different from the previous one, that it took as long as it took to create them! I've sold 12 of them so far, have 5 on reserve, and 6 of my latest dolls will be introduced at Torche Galerie's Winter Exhibit, opening in just a couple weeks! <br />

Happy Holidays! michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-48966910880408068272014-12-02T16:34:00.000-05:002014-12-02T19:43:51.915-05:00That's Idiosyn-CRAZY! An Enchanted Holiday Story...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6wW1gr4FOTs/VH4kMKW01wI/AAAAAAAADb4/8-QxgmPC3Yk/s1600/MissCottonCandy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6wW1gr4FOTs/VH4kMKW01wI/AAAAAAAADb4/8-QxgmPC3Yk/s1600/MissCottonCandy.jpg" height="320" width="148" /></a></div>
What follows may sound like the fascinating tale of a Holiday Miracle. Being on the receiving end, I'd have to say... it was!<br />
<br />
You see... just one week ago, I brought several of my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YesterdaysTrashArt?section_id=7483787&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1">Art Dolls</a> and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YesterdaysTrashArt?section_id=11553323&ref=shopsection_leftnav_2">Modern Vintage Rag Dolls</a> over to a local retailer in Point Pleasant, New Jersey... called <a href="http://www.idiosyncrazies.com/">Idiosyncrazies</a>. But you won't believe what happened after that! Here's how the story unfolded...<br />
<br />
Sharon, the owner, had self-admittedly been stalking my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YesterdaysTrashArt">Etsy shop</a> for quite some time after seeing several of my circus-themed items about a year ago. She asked If I would like to feature my dolls in her window for the holidays. My inner voice was like, "Ummm, hell yeah! Seriously?" But my professional self said, "It's definitely something I am interested in."<br />
<br />
After a brief meeting and a little show-and-tell, we decided that it would be a great match for both of us. Idiosyncrazies features works from local artists, US made goods, and fair trade items. It's a smorgasbord of goodies... and goodwill. I've loved her shop since I found it years ago, and when she told me that she had a Land of Misfit Toys theme in mind, well... I was hooked!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6jGXxwxLPjI/VH4mHTiKDDI/AAAAAAAADcE/efQHAWaWC_Q/s1600/someoneiswatchingme1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6jGXxwxLPjI/VH4mHTiKDDI/AAAAAAAADcE/efQHAWaWC_Q/s1600/someoneiswatchingme1.jpg" height="147" width="200" /></a></div>
I carefully selected about 15 Art Dolls and Rag Dolls I wanted to showcase — gathering a group of the most misfit of my bunch — packed them up and brought them over last Tuesday, for Sharon to create her window display. See the eyes watching from inside the box? That's one of my Tillie Knock Down Dolls, and no... I did not plan that. Sharon said when she was setting up the display, it felt like someone was watching her... and took this photo as proof. You never know what can happen in a fairy tale!<br />
<br />
Fast-forward to the day after Thanksgiving, when the dolls had been on full display for only their second business day. A longtime patron of Idiosycrazies art had come in first thing, to inquire about the dolls and where she might purchase some like those. Sharon delightfully informed the patron that all the dolls featured in the window were in fact for sale!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sMSYkUMHhvc/VH4pwRljOII/AAAAAAAADcQ/3xi4FCMwq3Y/s1600/MRB%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sMSYkUMHhvc/VH4pwRljOII/AAAAAAAADcQ/3xi4FCMwq3Y/s1600/MRB%2B2.jpg" height="400" width="281" /></a>The customer asked to see all of the Art Dolls individually, and as Sharon held each one up for a closer look, the customer said, "Okay, I like that one. And that one. And that one. And that one... Oh, I love them all!" She eventually decided on 4 of the 6 dolls... and purchased the Tillie Knock Down Doll as well. I was awe-struck!<br />
<br />
If that thrilling transaction wasn't joyful enough, I brought another Knock Down Doll to replace the one she bought... since it left a hole in Sharon's enchanting display. But when the customer came back to leave a deposit for the Art Dolls... she bought that Knock Down Doll too!<br />
<br />
And if my heart wasn't already bursting with gratitude, the customer asked the shop owner to have me call her. She had printouts of my dolls in her hand and told Sharon that she would like to buy more!<br />
<br />
So... earlier today... I connected with this enthusiastic art collector who so sweetly gushed over my art and creativity. And she bought 3 more dolls.<br />
<br />
Holiday Spirits... wherever you are... THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!<br />
<br />
Oh... and she said she'll probably buy more in the future. I am truly blessed!<br />

I was head-over-heels — or should I say, heads-over-wheels —when I found out that my sideshow conjoined twins Tillie and Willie found their forever home this weekend! I got a call from <a href="http://torchegalerie.com/">Torche' Galerie</a> owner Roddy Wildeman only a week after the exhibit opening and he broke the great news.<br />
<br />

The buyer was an interior designer who had stopped in the gallery... and as it turns out... loved the twins. He said they reminded him of something from <a href="http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/american-horror-story/episodes">American Horror Story: Freak Show</a>. I think I may have squealed out loud when I heard that comment! I had already conjured up so many new art doll ideas from watching the first 3 episodes, and after this sale... my wheels are turning even more. What can I say? The show must go on!<br />

Custom Jewelry Fun...I recently sold a bunch of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YesterdaysTrashArt?section_id=7483791&ref=shopsection_leftnav_5">repurposed vintage jewelry</a> to a somewhat local retail shop owner. She was so intrigued by the unique way I was able to take unusual objects and upcycle them into something wearable... that she entrusted me to create a few pieces from her own personal mementos. I was touched and honored, but when I got her box of goodies... Wow! It was filled with the most unique heirlooms I had ever seen! Here's what happened after that...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yY-arXd0ew4/VBxHVeD_CGI/AAAAAAAADaw/IxZELc6tdGk/s1600/PearlsAndPin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yY-arXd0ew4/VBxHVeD_CGI/AAAAAAAADaw/IxZELc6tdGk/s1600/PearlsAndPin.jpg" height="320" width="314" /></a></div>
I tackled the easy one first. My client had a vintage strand of pearls she wanted to convert to a double strand, and paired with a pearl pin. The biggest hurdle was that the pin had an open area in the center which exposed the pin backing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A10gxAiM440/VBxEk_uBF5I/AAAAAAAADaI/DXIIDVJyU3w/s1600/il_570xN.646092830_2d22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A10gxAiM440/VBxEk_uBF5I/AAAAAAAADaI/DXIIDVJyU3w/s1600/il_570xN.646092830_2d22.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
There were several solutions I could have gone with, and eventually chose the understated elegance of a vintage pearl button set behind the pin. Good thing I have such a large button collection! Current inventory: 2,846 white and off white buttons, now minus... 1!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pk8Qj-Dy5ug/VBxEq-586MI/AAAAAAAADaU/OZeMtZgwjCU/s1600/il_570xN.646203389_97l3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pk8Qj-Dy5ug/VBxEq-586MI/AAAAAAAADaU/OZeMtZgwjCU/s1600/il_570xN.646203389_97l3.jpg" height="328" width="400" /></a></div>
Next I took on the task of upcycling a few of her favorite pieces —a trio of gold heirlooms — which included her mother's baby pin, her own birth charm, and the letter M from a monogram pin she had. The design of the piece is a challenge for my imagination, but I love putting disparate items together to make them look as if it were perfectly planned from the start. The engineering of the piece as I turn my vision into an actual wearable necklace... well, that's another story. And I have to confess that taking apart and drilling holes in people's one-of-a-kind mementos is a bit nerve wracking. But everything went smoothly!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ADh1T8_Mik4/VBxEyMVhH7I/AAAAAAAADao/dDIUA2Lw3YI/s1600/il_570xN.646092254_4w0s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ADh1T8_Mik4/VBxEyMVhH7I/AAAAAAAADao/dDIUA2Lw3YI/s1600/il_570xN.646092254_4w0s.jpg" height="353" width="400" /></a></div>
After all that intensity, my mind needed a little break and I worked on my client's charm bracelet. Filled with tons of mementos from a vintage charm bracelet that belonged to her mom, then paired with a bunch of goodies I found from her own stash... this was lots of fun to work on. I do love a good charm bracelet. Made my want to make one for myself!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--4MJSKCq7sI/VBxEqzIkRzI/AAAAAAAADaY/2boLgNvQVLc/s1600/il_570xN.646092388_nx7i.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--4MJSKCq7sI/VBxEqzIkRzI/AAAAAAAADaY/2boLgNvQVLc/s1600/il_570xN.646092388_nx7i.jpg" height="347" width="400" /></a></div>
Then it was back to the most difficult but also the most intriguing piece of them all. With this perfectly patina'd necklace I incorporated a very unique carved, enameled pin with the letter P on it. I paired that with a vintage silver rattle that belonged to her mom. And the piece de resistance... her mom's carved, embossed silver birth bell. I had never seen heirlooms like this in my life. And the greatest part? They'll no longer be tucked quietly away in the jewelry box. They'll be the start of many, many interesting and touching conversations!michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-81984245680665487422014-07-23T08:16:00.000-04:002014-07-23T08:16:00.063-04:00I'm Stuffed!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm so very excited to announce that... I'm Stuffed! No... I'm not full from too much yummy food... I'm actually featured in the Autumn issue of <a href="http://stampington.com/Stuffed-Autumn-2014">Stuffed Magazine</a>! A trio of my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YesterdaysTrashArt?section_id=11553323&ref=shopsection_leftnav_4">Modern Vintage Rag Dolls</a> was chosen for their publication earlier this year, and my copy just arrived!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T6EkiRweAaY/U86PydP7GAI/AAAAAAAADZY/kVNwoYWSG6M/s1600/Stuffed_Autumn1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T6EkiRweAaY/U86PydP7GAI/AAAAAAAADZY/kVNwoYWSG6M/s1600/Stuffed_Autumn1.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
I was beyond giddy when I realized that my dolls were the first feature article in the magazine. How cool is that? And what an amazingly adorable job they did with the opening spread. Those paper lanterns are just too cute... and the perfect accent for my Geisha Girl!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F_nUcdrcbM4/U86P5pBoIBI/AAAAAAAADZg/iEMKrQmyS8g/s1600/Stuffed_Autumn2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F_nUcdrcbM4/U86P5pBoIBI/AAAAAAAADZg/iEMKrQmyS8g/s1600/Stuffed_Autumn2.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Cloud E. with Raindrop and Dottie the Cupcake got full page exposure... what a thrill! The layout really highlights each doll and details much of the heart and soul (and stitching) that went into them. So awesome!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dvbmkW220xc/U5ncWN6ZWZI/AAAAAAAADXk/ZjZapm5vIw0/s1600/ClownDottieFull.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dvbmkW220xc/U5ncWN6ZWZI/AAAAAAAADXk/ZjZapm5vIw0/s1600/ClownDottieFull.JPG" height="320" width="277" /></a></div>
So... right after my last big project — <a href="http://michellereneebernard.blogspot.com/2014/05/well-knock-me-over-happy-camper-story.html">creating 30 custom Knock Down Dolls</a> — I had to go right into a marathon of Art Doll making! With only 17 days until a gallery submission deadline, there was no clowning around for this girl. I had to accomplish what had previously taken me more than 3 times that to do! So... I neglected housecleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, the beach (that one hurt a little!), and I worked night and day, sleeping a lot less than usual... for more than two weeks! But I did it. I created 9 dolls from start to finish in that amount of time. It was a whirlwind of art making, but at the same time it was an incredible journey...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3hp4Ta6Co8s/U5naN5O5HvI/AAAAAAAADWw/oPLFChEGX1U/s1600/AHead.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3hp4Ta6Co8s/U5naN5O5HvI/AAAAAAAADWw/oPLFChEGX1U/s1600/AHead.jpg" height="400" width="390" /></a></div>
I'm not a big fan of being on an extremely tight deadline. I'm definitely more from the camp that "art takes as long as it takes." Because... well... it does!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xRv5nWlsbDs/U5naYcqvH8I/AAAAAAAADW4/Gcbcn1xZfGQ/s1600/AUnpaintedDolls.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xRv5nWlsbDs/U5naYcqvH8I/AAAAAAAADW4/Gcbcn1xZfGQ/s1600/AUnpaintedDolls.JPG" height="398" width="400" /></a></div>
However... needing to create quickly helped to keep me from overthinking things. Bonus! I'm definitely an overthinker... pondering the many, many facets for each stage of dollmaking. But I didn't have that luxury this time, and it kind of turned out to be a blessing. I committed to my decisions more quickly... and without much regret. Double bonus!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kvaw4dSQG2I/U5nbEv_rVAI/AAAAAAAADXA/GJ8BKp95uOM/s1600/DevilIsDaBomb.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kvaw4dSQG2I/U5nbEv_rVAI/AAAAAAAADXA/GJ8BKp95uOM/s1600/DevilIsDaBomb.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
At times I felt like I was possessed... or that I had sold my soul to the devil. But that was okay, because My Devil Is Da Bomb! Not only do I love making these dolls, but I enjoy coming up with whimsically clever names for them as well. From a design standpoint, don't ask my why my devil has glitter star pasties and a feather boa skirt. That's just my very odd brain hard at work!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FiDpRL1ENpQ/U5nb6ufu_3I/AAAAAAAADXI/rCBuCVhsz1I/s1600/SnowAngel.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FiDpRL1ENpQ/U5nb6ufu_3I/AAAAAAAADXI/rCBuCVhsz1I/s1600/SnowAngel.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Have you ever made a Snow Angel? Yeah... me too! I couldn't very well have a devil without an angel.... so I thought I'd make her white as snow. For good contrast. With a recycled blouse as her gown, some vintage jewelry to keep her afro in check, a repurposed bow, and pearls from my stash... she really is angelic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RhtCo2doss4/U5ncAE-JA6I/AAAAAAAADXU/F-ToP_stBxg/s1600/ToothFairy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RhtCo2doss4/U5ncAE-JA6I/AAAAAAAADXU/F-ToP_stBxg/s1600/ToothFairy.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
For a long time I didn't like my Tooth Fairy. She was a toughie. But I gave her a tulle shawl to match her tutu, a vintage jewel for her halter top and a couple of adorable blue bows for her hair buns... and I fell in love. I actually won't stop — on any of my dolls — until I fall in love. This just took a bit more falling until the love part.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wDbaTKfjsTk/U5ncL6R9dpI/AAAAAAAADXY/zkW2E87QR7Q/s1600/CircusTentFace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wDbaTKfjsTk/U5ncL6R9dpI/AAAAAAAADXY/zkW2E87QR7Q/s1600/CircusTentFace.JPG" height="311" width="400" /></a></div>
Having grown up near the boardwalks — and knowing that the gallery show would be for two summer months — I had to include some circus-carnival-inspired pieces. Welcome To The Big Top was one of my favorite ideas and I really enjoyed making her a circus tent style dress! Oh, and that hair! Totally over the top.... just how I like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rxz6CB65-8I/U5ncojaur5I/AAAAAAAADXo/MTAO7t1CZBY/s1600/ClownFace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Rxz6CB65-8I/U5ncojaur5I/AAAAAAAADXo/MTAO7t1CZBY/s1600/ClownFace.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
And sticking with the circus theme, Dottie The Clown might just be my favorite doll from this group. This tender heart touched my heart the most. So much emotion from that face!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qJwVtb_fNFc/U5ncxeBSmkI/AAAAAAAADXw/F9reUGv71eg/s1600/CandyApple.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qJwVtb_fNFc/U5ncxeBSmkI/AAAAAAAADXw/F9reUGv71eg/s1600/CandyApple.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
And from the whimsical — and more delicious — memories of my boardwalk days... came Candy Apple. I actually used to eat those things until I felt like I was going to break my teeth one day. So I switched to caramel. That art doll will be next!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cj0hwUJTV_I/U6GjlahqLwI/AAAAAAAADYY/Lc95Shf5OP4/s1600/DroppedMyIceCream.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cj0hwUJTV_I/U6GjlahqLwI/AAAAAAAADYY/Lc95Shf5OP4/s1600/DroppedMyIceCream.jpg" height="400" width="263" /></a></div>
And of course, no boardwalk, carnival or circus visit would be complete without an Oops! I Dropped My Ice Cream moment! I can say that I have dropped my ice cream before. And yes... I scooped up the part not touching the ground and resumed eating — without so much as skipping a beat!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-71uLA3Nlcao/U6GjuNRTxsI/AAAAAAAADYg/U4aozWdSdaE/s1600/BowWowWowGlamour.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-71uLA3Nlcao/U6GjuNRTxsI/AAAAAAAADYg/U4aozWdSdaE/s1600/BowWowWowGlamour.JPG" height="400" width="363" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
So that's a sneak peek at some of the dolls I created for this series. And I am so excited to share with you that <a href="http://torchegalerie.com/">Torche' Galerie</a> in Belmar, NJ has accepted all 9 of my dolls for their summer show! I am thrilled beyond words!! You can see the dolls in person at the exhibit opening on Saturday, July 12th, from 7-10. I'll let you know all the details as we get closer!michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-2734312536860453182014-05-22T17:20:00.000-04:002014-05-27T17:16:05.959-04:00Well, Knock Me Over! A Happy Camper Story...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5JbL9o1f-GE/U35iAz1X4NI/AAAAAAAADU0/9W_6E8RlyGw/s1600/KnockDownAngledAlt.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5JbL9o1f-GE/U35iAz1X4NI/AAAAAAAADU0/9W_6E8RlyGw/s1600/KnockDownAngledAlt.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
For the last few months, I've been working on a set of 30 custom Knock-Down Dolls. The request came from an event planner that I had worked with 2 years ago, on <a href="http://michellereneebernard.blogspot.com/2012/05/coming-to-life.html">another set of dolls</a>. These clients had requested a full arcade-style setup with Knock-Downs that went with their party theme. This latest job was centered around two girls who were having a Double Bat Mitzvah. They were camp buddies and so they wanted two dolls that looked like the guests of honor, and the rest would be "Happy Campers".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8vusijN2J0s/U4T_-sRjnfI/AAAAAAAADWY/RIH53M2-v3Q/s1600/CustomCircusPunks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8vusijN2J0s/U4T_-sRjnfI/AAAAAAAADWY/RIH53M2-v3Q/s1600/CustomCircusPunks.jpg" height="303" width="400" /></a></div>
The design process begins on the computer, and I work with my client to create the right kind of art for their particular theme. It was tons of fun designing the happy campers and making Knock-Down Doll art of the girls in their party dresses.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NSTJTDQb4cI/U35kDBJiKzI/AAAAAAAADVA/Y29JLXaQtTQ/s1600/CaitlinFabric.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NSTJTDQb4cI/U35kDBJiKzI/AAAAAAAADVA/Y29JLXaQtTQ/s1600/CaitlinFabric.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Once the client approves, I send it out to <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/welcome">Spoonflower </a>to create custom fabric from my illustrations. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8p-hjG-9BCY/U35koNWkjWI/AAAAAAAADVE/qrOiY319QaY/s1600/FabricBlonde.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8p-hjG-9BCY/U35koNWkjWI/AAAAAAAADVE/qrOiY319QaY/s1600/FabricBlonde.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
For the Happy Campers, I got to create blonde, brunette and redheaded girls in their camp uniforms. I even made backs for the dolls, that looked like each girl from behind!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UVimq22eUgw/U35lLIX2W1I/AAAAAAAADVM/jb-MC3AmVCg/s1600/PinnedWithFur.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UVimq22eUgw/U35lLIX2W1I/AAAAAAAADVM/jb-MC3AmVCg/s1600/PinnedWithFur.JPG" height="268" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Making faux fur sandwiches — pinning each doll inside out with very thick 2-1/2" long fur fabric — is a challenge. But one of the highlights of this job was that I got to match the fur to the hair color of the Happy Campers!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_H0BMMNzyHE/U35mQbOsIzI/AAAAAAAADVc/rEhIFHNrDuk/s1600/BaseTacks.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_H0BMMNzyHE/U35mQbOsIzI/AAAAAAAADVc/rEhIFHNrDuk/s1600/BaseTacks.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Once the dolls are sewn and stuffed, I add wooden bases — silkscreened with my logo — to the bottom of each one. Because these Knock-Down Dolls are a throwback to the old boardwalk days, I love using vintage hardware to finish them with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bR5NMzPWs5M/U35mvm6DThI/AAAAAAAADVo/eWSgZ7Js1k8/s1600/TriColorTrioCircle.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bR5NMzPWs5M/U35mvm6DThI/AAAAAAAADVo/eWSgZ7Js1k8/s1600/TriColorTrioCircle.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Once they were all together, the smiles on their faces said it all. Yup... we have some Happy Campers!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zBjkV8YjYMI/U35m39OpVEI/AAAAAAAADVw/3YqGiD1HU7Q/s1600/CaitlinPaigeFront.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zBjkV8YjYMI/U35m39OpVEI/AAAAAAAADVw/3YqGiD1HU7Q/s1600/CaitlinPaigeFront.JPG" height="400" width="363" /></a></div>
The Party Girls were pretty adorable as well. Their dresses were designed from original photos of their party outfits. Lots and lots and lots of rhinestones...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JQhTIhdLY_0/U35nk_LPMZI/AAAAAAAADV4/rp0-pzTWlWQ/s1600/CaitlinPaigeBack.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JQhTIhdLY_0/U35nk_LPMZI/AAAAAAAADV4/rp0-pzTWlWQ/s1600/CaitlinPaigeBack.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
...which I mimicked on the back for their names and Bat Mitzvah date! Mazel Tov!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ck2Yk-uzLQc/U35oG41w-uI/AAAAAAAADWI/4eXsolIdbv0/s1600/KnockDownClassPhoto.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ck2Yk-uzLQc/U35oG41w-uI/AAAAAAAADWI/4eXsolIdbv0/s1600/KnockDownClassPhoto.JPG" height="227" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
All-in-all, this had to be one of the most fun jobs I've worked on in a very long time. And my client is a breeze to work with. Our co-collaboration resulted in some pretty cute Knock-Down Dolls. All the little details really make them "out standing". There's only one thing left to do... knock 'em down!michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-69215318942913870932014-04-07T16:59:00.000-04:002014-04-07T16:59:03.021-04:00Dolls on Exhibit... a Torche' Galerie Opening Nite! <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PCpDPxl3IL8/Uwd4nHAs7DI/AAAAAAAADSo/fjAneas_Ef4/s1600/PolkaDotBunnyPink.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PCpDPxl3IL8/Uwd4nHAs7DI/AAAAAAAADSo/fjAneas_Ef4/s1600/PolkaDotBunnyPink.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Well, it took a little longer than I anticpated... but I finally finished my first official collection of folk art style dolls for 2014. With 10 little babies to create from paper clay, I ended up letting them discover who they wanted to be as I sculpted away. I did have some very specific ideas for personalities in mind before beginning... but the creative thoughts that came during the process made it that much more exciting. They just came to life in my very hands. I'm such a proud momma.<br />
<br />
From bunnies in tutus, to moons orbiting earth, to cotton candy personified, to an underwater sea creature, and more... they were such fun to watch unfold before my eyes! I loved getting lost in the process and finding myself again in the tiniest of details. It was fun. It was frustrating at times. It was even a little scary. But mostly... I enjoyed the unpredictability of this journey. <br />
<br />
So, let's take a look at some of my new art dolls...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5_P1VFfPE9o/Uwd7W8kfRLI/AAAAAAAADS0/IwBjLFhCUfs/s1600/FrontDoorHouseGirl.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5_P1VFfPE9o/Uwd7W8kfRLI/AAAAAAAADS0/IwBjLFhCUfs/s1600/FrontDoorHouseGirl.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
This is Hope. No matter where she goes, she always feels at home. She's kind of a homebody.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M7BKfzFZAOM/Uwd747qipII/AAAAAAAADS8/1utR5-FpHHA/s1600/EArthMoonAlt.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M7BKfzFZAOM/Uwd747qipII/AAAAAAAADS8/1utR5-FpHHA/s1600/EArthMoonAlt.JPG" height="400" width="312" /></a></div>
Here is Mother Earth, with the orbiting moon as her head. She's got the whole world in her hands. The scarf was a last minute addition, but it does get cold up there at the North Pole! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AHtUAMUX9rM/Uwd8iEltBYI/AAAAAAAADTI/7sB91uRC7us/s1600/LionFullFrontal.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AHtUAMUX9rM/Uwd8iEltBYI/AAAAAAAADTI/7sB91uRC7us/s1600/LionFullFrontal.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Leonardo — a.k.a. The King of Cats — is a real sweetheart and a romantic. I actually used my kitties' naturally shed whiskers for this doll. And yes, I've been collecting those whiskers for years for just such a purpose.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cP5fR8pa3LU/Uwd9I6YBDqI/AAAAAAAADTQ/YIbR7MDQRo8/s1600/FullFrontalCottonCandy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cP5fR8pa3LU/Uwd9I6YBDqI/AAAAAAAADTQ/YIbR7MDQRo8/s1600/FullFrontalCottonCandy.jpg" height="400" width="308" /></a></div>
Ain't she sweet? This is Miss Cotton Candy in all her pink glory. With an inverted cone as her off-the-shoulder ball gown, she's ready for a night on... the boardwalk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g_GiwkcEDhY/Uwd_5SGdewI/AAAAAAAADTk/_VVTuFgmwv4/s1600/CrustaceaGlamour.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-g_GiwkcEDhY/Uwd_5SGdewI/AAAAAAAADTk/_VVTuFgmwv4/s1600/CrustaceaGlamour.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Crustacea is Queen of the Lobsters. But it wasn't easy. She had to pinch
her way to the top, one arthropod at a time! She's all dressed up for
the Coral Cotillion, aboard the sunken pirate Ship Destiny. I wonder
what great treasures await her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjgPFMASXBg/Uwd9kI1xEdI/AAAAAAAADTY/xc8nt3_Fbvw/s1600/GlamourBear.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OjgPFMASXBg/Uwd9kI1xEdI/AAAAAAAADTY/xc8nt3_Fbvw/s1600/GlamourBear.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
And this little angel is Aspen. Made from parts of an old teddy bear (yes, that awesome bow belonged to the bear), she won my heart and will become part of my own personal collection. Now to carve out some time for the next round of dolls. Hmmmm.... where shall I go from here?<br />
<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k_itUin30cs/Usw4yAO110I/AAAAAAAADRM/ifCgcm4BWyE/s1600/TillieManufacturing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k_itUin30cs/Usw4yAO110I/AAAAAAAADRM/ifCgcm4BWyE/s1600/TillieManufacturing.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
For more than three years now I've been making art for a living. And by art, I mean acrylic paintings, mixed media collage, circus themed assemblage, boardwalk style knock-down dolls, modern vintage-looking rag dolls, paper clay dolls, upcycled jewelry from flea market finds, and a few other things I'm sure!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IhtjHAwmgDM/Usw6IIcXMkI/AAAAAAAADRc/CqFA47-8Ccw/s1600/CarnivalAssemblagesFini.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IhtjHAwmgDM/Usw6IIcXMkI/AAAAAAAADRc/CqFA47-8Ccw/s1600/CarnivalAssemblagesFini.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
And while I love every single one of these creative endeavors... I felt I needed more focus. I wanted to fine tune my own personal style. I thought maybe I should concentrate on one type of art. But which one? I love them all! I wanted to showcase the multitude of ideas in my head... but at the same time I wanted to utilize all the skills I've acquired in all the disciplines I love.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G0vKRhSoz0k/Usw63wSmUII/AAAAAAAADRk/3e2owh69sI4/s1600/FolkArtTillieFaces.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G0vKRhSoz0k/Usw63wSmUII/AAAAAAAADRk/3e2owh69sI4/s1600/FolkArtTillieFaces.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
I thought for a very, very, very, long time. I reached into my brain... and then into my soul. I weighed and measured each of the creative categories with my head... and with my heart (and maybe a little bit in my gut too)! And came up with... Art Dolls!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FudlQbRDrmU/Usw7kAUWu_I/AAAAAAAADRs/hxXPGJsCmyY/s1600/HoldingWoundedDeer.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FudlQbRDrmU/Usw7kAUWu_I/AAAAAAAADRs/hxXPGJsCmyY/s1600/HoldingWoundedDeer.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
I've dabbled with paper clay figures in the past, but they took hours and hours to make. But... they were also some of my favorite creations to date! I do love to make art that expresses emotion... and what better way than something with a face!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0DJ9DTg30Dg/Usw8t1xbGXI/AAAAAAAADR4/9YJHCOO838Q/s1600/ArtDollsWIPFini.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0DJ9DTg30Dg/Usw8t1xbGXI/AAAAAAAADR4/9YJHCOO838Q/s1600/ArtDollsWIPFini.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
I also love that my Art Dolls allow me to utilize all my favorite materials and skills... working with clay, paint, repurposed flea market finds, sewing and fabric creations, adding collage elements, assemblage... heck, even some of my jewelry skills come in handy! It's really a mixed media paradise when you think about it. Hooray!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iG1_M2Apo2k/Usw9TlJvxxI/AAAAAAAADSA/7nKtPr2SEaA/s1600/ArtDolls6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iG1_M2Apo2k/Usw9TlJvxxI/AAAAAAAADSA/7nKtPr2SEaA/s1600/ArtDolls6.JPG" height="321" width="400" /></a></div>
And so I have made the decision to concentrate my efforts this year on making Art Dolls! I've already started a few and can't seem to keep my hands off of them! I have more ideas than time, but I put some things aside like laundry, cleaning, shopping, fixing the bathtub faucet and even getting a haircut... just to work on these fun creations!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rDbCtahGIVM/Usw-Mllp49I/AAAAAAAADSM/pxUJcBQfNlU/s1600/LetsFaceItTwoEye.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rDbCtahGIVM/Usw-Mllp49I/AAAAAAAADSM/pxUJcBQfNlU/s1600/LetsFaceItTwoEye.JPG" height="317" width="400" /></a></div>
As a creative person who loves several forms of art, I have to say that it was not an easy decision to make... focusing on one discipline. However, once I made the choice, sat down and started to make these little creatures come to life... well, there wasn't one ounce of regret in my own little body. Playing with dolls. Yeah... pretty much a dream come true for me.<br />
<br />
So, off I go into the land of dolls. If you don't hear from me for awhile it's because I'm busy creating. But you can keep up with my adventures on my <a href="http://www.facebook.com/YesterdaysTrashArt">Facebook Page</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/MixedMediaGirl">Twitter</a>. <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QL3YXFTc0pk/UrCyxAt49yI/AAAAAAAADQc/iWEEvpx88J4/s1600/SewWhatNecklace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QL3YXFTc0pk/UrCyxAt49yI/AAAAAAAADQc/iWEEvpx88J4/s400/SewWhatNecklace.JPG" width="281" /></a></div>
I thought I'd share some more images from my recent jaunt into jewelry making before I go ahead and retire my flat and round-nosed pliers for awhile! This found object necklace is chock full of buttons, baubles, sewing notions and even a vintage jingle bell. I chose an off-white monochromatic color scheme because it complimented the silver patina perfectly. If it doesn't go to a good home during my <a href="http://michellereneebernard.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-accidental-jeweler.html">December showcase at the Oceanic Library</a>... I may just keep this one!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VFclP5meZgU/UrC0nvznpFI/AAAAAAAADQo/JQTMKTsqLK4/s1600/I_Do.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VFclP5meZgU/UrC0nvznpFI/AAAAAAAADQo/JQTMKTsqLK4/s400/I_Do.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
This wedding bracelet is a fun and whimsical statement for that bride-to-be! With silver and pearly-white charms, embellishments and more, this themed piece has an extra-special set of charms made with beads that spell out "YES" and "I DO". It would make a perfect gift from your Prince Charm-ing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ciDQJ1oI_68/UrC1p2U3VvI/AAAAAAAADQw/k5YRWXK4w04/s1600/OpalBraceletNecklace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ciDQJ1oI_68/UrC1p2U3VvI/AAAAAAAADQw/k5YRWXK4w04/s400/OpalBraceletNecklace.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
These two golden pieces were made for each other... and gathered from flea markets years apart. A gorgeous opal bracelet-turned-choker, with a deconstructed pin, hung with vintage gold chain makes this piece a simple but elegant necklace. I'd wear it with a throwback party dress or even a tee shirt and jeans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gh1gqQDjgUI/UrC4ubgUEpI/AAAAAAAADQ8/_tB52QDj3iI/s1600/VintageKey.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gh1gqQDjgUI/UrC4ubgUEpI/AAAAAAAADQ8/_tB52QDj3iI/s400/VintageKey.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
Keys, keys and more vintage skeleton keys! I have a whole bunch of them, but run out of ideas for what to do with them. So when a vintage metal pin matches the steely grey-blue patina of an old key, it's a great opportunity to combine the two for added interest. Pair them with some vintage costume beads and the door is now open!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o6Jnz11RABI/UrCyjrBv8mI/AAAAAAAADQY/UznHPPWBJQI/s1600/SquishedPennies.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-o6Jnz11RABI/UrCyjrBv8mI/AAAAAAAADQY/UznHPPWBJQI/s400/SquishedPennies.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
And this time I did something a little different... creating necklaces out of squished pennies. I love squished pennies! I've made <a href="http://www.yesterdaystrashart.com/jewelry_pennybracelet.html">bracelets</a> with them before, adding tons of beads and charms that went the themes of these awesome 51¢ souvenirs... but they take quite a while to create. I wanted to make something for my jewelry show that would be a great gift at a better price point... and these embellished copper keepsakes were just the thing.<br />
<br />
So now it's time to retire my jewelry tools, put away my beads, baubles, charms, and head out into new territory! I've done some really hard thinking this year and I'm going in a different creative direction for 2014. Stay tuned... michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-1838594081892510192013-12-12T08:38:00.000-05:002013-12-12T08:38:00.515-05:00Don't Mess With My Candy (Apple)!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2TX0UyQBgRk/UqiXZxW3P3I/AAAAAAAADPc/LeXilSwW3oo/s1600/CandyAppleFace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2TX0UyQBgRk/UqiXZxW3P3I/AAAAAAAADPc/LeXilSwW3oo/s400/CandyAppleFace.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
After a very quick two weeks of jewelry-making... I needed a bit of play time again. I felt like painting, but I wasn't sure what to paint. Then I remembered that I had a bunch of drawings in my sketchbook.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JRloUQsL1h4/UqiYxSbTxxI/AAAAAAAADPo/vmFzcBMwbRs/s1600/CandyAppleSketchSM.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JRloUQsL1h4/UqiYxSbTxxI/AAAAAAAADPo/vmFzcBMwbRs/s400/CandyAppleSketchSM.jpg" width="308" /></a></div>
I had done them awhile back... in an attempt to find my own personal style (which I'm finding out is a constant quest!). So I thought, these sketches are very much me... let's see how the candy apple looks in paint!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4RtvW-Z9xNE/UqiZp63b0pI/AAAAAAAADPw/YdbhPQ94Wi8/s1600/CandyApplePainting.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4RtvW-Z9xNE/UqiZp63b0pI/AAAAAAAADPw/YdbhPQ94Wi8/s400/CandyApplePainting.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I also thought it might be a great addition to my current gallery <a href="http://michellereneebernard.blogspot.com/2013/10/gallery-show-opening-saturday-november.html">show,</a> since I had sold a couple of pieces already. But when I finished the painting, I loved it so much... I decided to keep it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g2wbnl4z5sQ/UqiaJCxyO9I/AAAAAAAADP4/jP4ihr9eSUU/s1600/CandyAppleEyePatch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g2wbnl4z5sQ/UqiaJCxyO9I/AAAAAAAADP4/jP4ihr9eSUU/s400/CandyAppleEyePatch.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Oh, and I have no idea where the eye patch (complete with a red rhinestone heart) came from... it just popped into my brain while I was working on the piece. I think I really wanted to get the point across, not to mess with my candy! And a 3D element on any of my pieces always adds that touch of whimsy I love so much.michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6205231279562277758.post-3939596869025484572013-12-07T08:48:00.000-05:002013-12-07T08:48:00.110-05:00The Accidental Jeweler...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lew5J6-vViQ/UqJFWrGi3XI/AAAAAAAADN8/WLpDUWmo_5c/s1600/VintageBabyBluePink.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lew5J6-vViQ/UqJFWrGi3XI/AAAAAAAADN8/WLpDUWmo_5c/s400/VintageBabyBluePink.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
What happens when you make a plan in November of 2012 to be the Jewelry Artist of the Month at a local library in December of 2013? Well, if you're like me... you totally forget... then you get a phone call 10 days before the month starts, and you scramble like mad to make some jewelry!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dx4_WSvaxD8/UqJF73OEp6I/AAAAAAAADOE/MYOketDwYjE/s1600/Stash.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dx4_WSvaxD8/UqJF73OEp6I/AAAAAAAADOE/MYOketDwYjE/s400/Stash.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
So I broke out my stash and pulled pieces that spoke to me. My process is usually... go through silver junk and take out what calls to me... go through gold stuff and take out what appeals to me... go through beads that match... and chains that coordinate. Begin!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kyyrzwccSK4/UqJGJq__5fI/AAAAAAAADOM/QYSmyAJFJ-M/s1600/GardenPartyNecklace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kyyrzwccSK4/UqJGJq__5fI/AAAAAAAADOM/QYSmyAJFJ-M/s400/GardenPartyNecklace.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I got to pair new goodies with old goodies, which is always fun. I had this two-tone metal bracelet with floral accents for ages... and just recently found this cute little garden party hat to complete this piece!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dIz4EHJRB6g/UqJGl16s8II/AAAAAAAADOU/gqk3MvoTNk8/s1600/OhBlarneyNecklace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dIz4EHJRB6g/UqJGl16s8II/AAAAAAAADOU/gqk3MvoTNk8/s400/OhBlarneyNecklace.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I was channeling my love of everything Irish when I created this 'Oh, Blarney' charm necklace! I just love using tons and tons of monochromatic and metallic matching mementos. Lucky me!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IaISTY0zQaY/UqJHrVkt4fI/AAAAAAAADOk/vTrFnBh6H-c/s1600/SingerSewingRed.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IaISTY0zQaY/UqJHrVkt4fI/AAAAAAAADOk/vTrFnBh6H-c/s400/SingerSewingRed.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
This was my absolute favorite creation this time around. But it didn't even make it to the show, as it was snatched up after I posted it on Facebook! I do love that it's going to a good home.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dFijH02BGsA/UqJHOTJiTEI/AAAAAAAADOc/Jls_iy3alhA/s1600/JulietHelper.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dFijH02BGsA/UqJHOTJiTEI/AAAAAAAADOc/Jls_iy3alhA/s400/JulietHelper.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I made jewelry every day — and even into the night — for almost two weeks. And even though my little helper is as cute as a button... she didn't get as much done overnight as I had hoped she would. Oh, well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oL3V1epKy5g/UqJI1Nb5cvI/AAAAAAAADO4/XAOrzmyG8BE/s1600/Nest.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oL3V1epKy5g/UqJI1Nb5cvI/AAAAAAAADO4/XAOrzmyG8BE/s320/Nest.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
It was great to take a break from all the painting I did this summer. I got a quick and unexpected reminder as to why I collect these shiny baubles like a magpie... and how I love turning memories of the past into wearable mementos.<br />
<br />
My work will be available all month long at the <a href="http://oceaniclib.org/Home_Page.php">Oceanic Library</a> in Rumson, NJ. And 20% of all my jewelry sales go directly to the library! So if you're local... go check out my vintage upcycled creations this December!<br />

After
an incredible discount-focused weekend at those big box stores, I have
to ask myself, <i>"How can a small art business compete with such low
prices on mass-produced goods?"</i> This is how — I don't. I have to look at
it like this... <i>they</i> can't compete with me! I'm unique,
friendly, real, approachable, honest, flexible... and everything in my
shop was made by me... with Love!<br />

On this day that we call Thanksgiving... I thought it would be a really good time to ponder that prefix a bit more...<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
THANKS</div>
<br />
On any given moment of any given day, I'm most likely rushing around... trying to get stuff done... completing my daily tasks... doing household chores... working on freelance graphic design jobs... or making something creative to sell. In those same moments, there are constant worries and fears as well. Where is my next dollar coming from? Do I have enough energy to keep up this pace? What's up with all these health issues? Can I even afford health insurance? Is our town safe from another storm? Is our house? There are too many to list.<br />
<br />
But lately, I've been making it a practice to say "Thanks" at the end of every day. Thanks for the good stuff that's happened. And thanks for the not-so-good stuff too... for there are lessons and learning and growth in those! But in doing this, I've realized that I have so much to be thankful for. That every moment of every day is a thankful moment. And most moments — when I stop and think about them — are actually pretty darn good. And that any worry I usually have is picking up on events of the past and projecting them onto my future. In other words, they haven't even happened!<br />
<br />
So I think to myself, that right now... in this moment... everything is fine. And I say... Thanks!michelle renée bernardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17414345915827524573noreply@blogger.com0
